The Gift of God

Living Water, come satisfy my thirst.

I'm dead inside; within, I feel so cursed.

Transform me, Lord, and teach me how to ask.

I'm tired of this farce. I lay down my mask.

I'm fearful to open up and express

what I've spent years trying to suppress.

Consumed with tradition, man's legacy,

I grasp onto it with tenacity,

wanting to stay rooted in what I know.

I can't see You're greater than this shadow.

Open my eyes to see Your magnitude.

Jesus, show me Your love in gratitude.

Gift of God, so full of mercy and grace,

when I turn from You, redirect my face.

Keep explaining until I understand

Your love contained within every command.

Caught up in life, I only see distress.

Show me how to hand over all this mess.

Too caught up in the pain of my struggles,

I can't see You're greater than my troubles.

"Why, God, did You allow this to happen?

I want proof of Your love, now in action!"

Distracted, thoughts of "why" and "how" intrude.

It's not "how" or "why," but "Who" You imbue.

Eternal Spring of Water, welling up,

fill me completely. Overflow my cup.

Create in me a desire to seek

Your voice. O God, I want to hear You speak.

To the depths of my soul, Lord, I give access.

To all Your precepts, God, I acquiesce.

Knowing You is the treasure I now seek,

Your words of truth and love, the words I speak.

I knock diligently upon Your door.

You answer me. I get to know You more.

Let Your eternal joy replace my moods.

Keep my mind on You, ever renewed.

This poem was inspired by the story of the woman at the well and her part in the conversation that she had with Jesus, holding on to her presumptions instead of seeing the living water standing in front of her.
